Exciting Day In the Life of Software Tester
I had an interesting exchange with a young lad in the supermarket tonight. The lad was behind the till and the conversation sort of went like this
Lad: "So you had an exciting day at work then...?"
Me(packing dinner and trying to forget about work)"Emm yeaa..always busy.."
Lad(brightens up): "Oh what do you do If you don't mind me asking"
Me(Trying to remember what I do at work) "Emm I'm a software tester.."
Lad(frowns for a second): "Ohh I take back my comment about the exciting then.."
Me(abashed): Well..you know it has its moments..(exits till with dinner)
I have a lot of those conversations when people ask what I do. It usually ends with them going "Oh..". and "never mind could be worse you could be doing.." and some horrible job like cleaning toilets on 11pm night train to Perth.
To be honest, my current project which I have been on for the last 7 months I have done very little proper testing. For the most part, I have looked up data and tried to keep other people's defects on the move. A lot of the time I have my head hands going "WTF"
Today, my "exciting" day was getting some "new" permission on my user profile. I had to navigate the client's bureaucracy to get permission to use the dev tools in the browser. Three IM's, one chatbot, a guided walk through an online form and an email is all it took( sarcasm). All this is because I am going to be doing some proper software testing next week. Given how this project is going this will change. I will be back to chasing other people's defects and holding my head in my hands.
