Being Disappointed...
As a fan of a lower league football club, I have suffered countless disappointments. You know the kind. When that expensive foreign player arrives with great fanfare and high expectations. The player is a flop or has lost form. The player then leaves the club at the next opportunity. The player blames the loss of form on his wife missing her pet poodle. The disappointment in the manager when he sells the best striker to a team in the same league. In the next game against the same player then proceeds to bang 2 goals in against your team. The player then celebrates a bit too much in front of your sad manager who knows his P45 is waiting for him at full time.
As a football fan of a lower league team, you learn to live with these disappointments. You become almost engrained against them. Today though my disappointment in my club will take some time to get over. Raith Rovers have decided to sign a player who's had a civil court conviction for rape. The victim gave up her right to anonymity to pursue him and has suffered further because of it. The player has never shown any contrition or ever said sorry. His career has continued as if nothing has happened. He has been playing for Clyde for a few seasons.
The fallout has been quick. Val McDermid who has been a financial backer of the club has withdrawn her sponsorship. The captain of the ladies team has quit, I suspect she will not be the last. A couple of directors have left as well. This story will rumble on and on will not be good for my team.
I know that a lot of dedicated fans will hold their noses, grind their teeth and go to the game. They will make themselves feel better by shouting at the remaining directors. I will not be one of them. For the time being, I will not be going to any home games. If I want to see live football I will go and watch another team. I know I won't have the same emotional involvement in the game. At least though my money won't be going towards paying the wage of a player that I do not want at my club
